I Have an Idea — What's the First Thing I Should Print?

You've got a logo, a design, or a brand concept and you want to make it physical. The first thing you print sets the tone for everything that follows. Choose wisely.

You've got a logo, a design, or a brand concept and you want to make it physical. The first thing you print sets the tone for everything that follows - but it doesn't need to be complicated or expensive.

If You're Starting a Business: Business Cards

For a service business, freelancer, or anyone who meets clients in person, a business card is the natural first print. It forces you to make design decisions (logo placement, colours, fonts, contact hierarchy) that inform everything you print after it. Think of the card as a design test run at a very low cost.

If You're Building a Brand: Stickers

Stickers are the cheapest way to get your design out into the world. They go on laptops, packaging, water bottles, and anywhere else your audience puts them. They're also the fastest way to test whether people respond to a visual - if someone wants your sticker, they like your brand. Minimum investment, maximum feedback.

If You're Launching a Product: Packaging First

If you sell a physical product, the packaging is the first thing customers touch. A branded sticker seal, a printed box, a custom label - these define the unboxing experience and the perceived value of what's inside. Get the packaging right and everything else (the website, the social media, the signage) follows the same design language.

If You're Opening a Space: Signage

For a shopfront, studio, or practice, signage is job one. It's the first thing every visitor sees and the last thing they see when they leave. A window graphic, a door decal, or a simple wall sign establishes your presence before you print anything else.

The Universal Rule

Whatever you print first, make it good. First impressions from your first print run define how people perceive your brand going forward. A thoughtful business card, a well-produced sticker, or a clean sign says "this is a real thing." A rushed first print says "this is a hobby." Spend the extra on good materials and a considered design. You'll use the same design language for years.
