Screen Print: The Site Standard
For high-volume workwear that gets hammered daily, screen printing is still the benchmark. The ink is pushed through a mesh screen and bonds into the fabric fibres. The result is a durable print that softens with wear rather than cracking or peeling.
Screen print handles repeated industrial washing, UV exposure, and physical abrasion better than most alternatives. It's the reason you still see legible logos on hi-vis shirts that have clearly been through hundreds of wash cycles.
The trade-off is setup cost. Each colour requires a separate screen, so screen printing only makes economic sense at higher quantities - typically 25 to 50 units minimum, depending on the design.
DTF: Great for Small Runs, Decent Durability
DTF printing has improved dramatically. The film is pressed onto the garment at high temperature, creating a bond that handles normal washing well. For office wear, retail, hospitality, and light-duty trade use, DTF is perfectly durable.
Where it falls short is extreme conditions. Constant exposure to industrial chemicals, abrasive dust environments, or aggressive washing cycles (hot water, commercial tumble dryers) can shorten the print life compared to screen print. For most trade applications that involve normal wear and home washing, DTF holds up fine.
The advantage is flexibility. Full colour, no minimums, complex designs, photo prints - all without a screen setup fee. If your team is small or your designs change often, DTF is the practical choice.
Embroidery: Built for Punishment
Embroidered logos are inherently durable. Thread doesn't fade in UV the way ink can. It doesn't crack, peel, or wash off. An embroidered chest logo will typically outlast the garment it's stitched onto.
Embroidery suits polos, jackets, caps, and any garment where the logo is relatively small and simple. It adds perceived quality - an embroidered shirt reads as more established than a printed one. The limitation is detail. Fine text, gradients, and photographic images don't translate to embroidery. It works best with bold, clean logos.
Vinyl Heat Transfer: Use With Caution
Cut vinyl heat transfer - where individual letters or shapes are cut from coloured vinyl and pressed onto the garment - works for names, numbers, and simple one-colour graphics. It's common on sports uniforms and hi-vis where individual names are needed.
It doesn't hold up as well as screen print or embroidery under harsh site conditions. Edges can lift with repeated washing, especially on textured fabrics. For workwear, use it where you need personalisation (individual names) rather than as a primary branding method.
What About the Blank?
The garment itself matters as much as the print. A quality blank in the right fabric weight for the conditions will outlast a cheap one regardless of print method. Cotton is comfortable but absorbs moisture and stains. Polyester is durable and dries fast but can be uncomfortable in heat. Cotton-poly blends usually offer the best balance.
For site work, look at fabric weight. A 180gsm tee is a different proposition to a 150gsm one. Heavier doesn't always mean better, but it generally means more durable. The blank quality guide covers this in detail.
The Simple Decision
Large team, same design, harsh conditions: screen print on quality blanks. Small team, varied designs, normal conditions: DTF on quality blanks. Polos and jackets with simple logos: embroidery. Individual names on hi-vis: vinyl heat transfer.
