Vinyl Banners vs Fabric Banners: Which One Do You Need?

Both do the job of putting a message on a wall, fence, or display stand. But vinyl and fabric banners behave differently in different settings, and choosing the wrong one means either overspending or ending up with something that doesn't look right for the space.

Vinyl Banners: The Outdoor Standard

Vinyl banners are printed on PVC banner material, typically 440gsm. They're tough, waterproof, UV-resistant, and designed to handle wind, rain, and direct sun. They're the default for outdoor applications - fence banners, building wraps, event perimeters, shopfront promotions, and anything that needs to survive the elements.

Finishing is usually hemmed edges with stainless steel eyelets for cable-tie or rope mounting. They hang flat, resist tearing at the edges, and last 1 to 3 years outdoors depending on conditions.

The trade-off: vinyl is reflective under lights, which makes it less ideal for indoor displays. It also creases when folded, and those fold marks don't fully drop out. If you're transporting it, roll it around a core rather than folding.

Fabric Banners: The Indoor Choice

Fabric banners are printed on polyester using dye-sublimation, where the ink is absorbed into the fibres rather than sitting on top. The result looks and feels like fabric, not plastic. They drape naturally, don't reflect light, and have a richness of colour that vinyl can't match indoors.

Economy fabric (120gsm) is lightweight and works well for events, temporary indoor displays, and applications where the banner hangs freely. Premium fabric (250gsm) has more body, hangs straighter, and suits permanent retail and hospitality installations.

Fabric banners can be finished with rod pockets for hanging from poles or dowels, or hemmed edges with eyelets like vinyl. They fold without permanent creasing - any fold marks drop out within hours of hanging.

The trade-off: fabric isn't waterproof and degrades faster in outdoor conditions. Use it indoors or under full shelter only.
