Business Cards, Flyers or Signs: Where Should I Spend First?

You've got a new business, a limited budget, and a list of things you probably need printed. Business cards, flyers, signs - they all feel necessary, but you can't do everything at once. Here's how to decide what to spend on first.

You've got a new business, a limited budget, and a list of things you probably need printed. Business cards, flyers, signs - they all feel necessary, but you can't do everything at once. So where does the money go first?

The answer depends on one thing: where do your customers actually find you?

If You Have a Shopfront, Start With Signs

If people walk or drive past your business, signage is the single most important investment you can make. Nothing else you print will be seen by as many people, as often, for as long. A good shopfront sign works 24 hours a day without you touching it.

This doesn't have to mean a $5,000 illuminated fascia on day one. A clean window graphic, a well-designed A-frame on the footpath, or a simple vinyl panel on the wall above the door can completely change how your space reads from the street.

The goal is recognition. Someone who drives past three times should know your name, what you do, and roughly what to expect inside. If your shopfront doesn't communicate that, business cards and flyers won't fix it.

If You Work on the Road, Start With Vehicle Branding

Tradies, mobile services, cleaners, landscapers - your vehicle is your shopfront. It's parked in driveways, outside job sites, at the lights, in car parks. Every stop is an impression.

Even basic vehicle branding - door logos, a rear window decal, and clean contact details - makes you look established. It costs less than a full wrap and works every day without any effort from you.

Vehicle signage before business cards. Every time. The card sits in a wallet. The ute sits in front of 20 houses a week.

If You Work Mostly Online or by Referral, Start With Cards

If your business lives in DMs, at markets, in networking rooms, or through word of mouth, a well-designed business card is your best first spend. Not because cards are magic, but because they're the easiest way to leave something physical with someone who just met you.

A good card on decent stock makes people keep it. A cheap one gets binned. If you're spending money on cards, spend it on the paper and the design, not the quantity. 250 good cards beat 1,000 flimsy ones.

When Do Flyers Make Sense?

Flyers are great for one thing: getting a specific message in front of people who are physically nearby. Letterbox drops for local services. Handouts at events. Counter displays in complementary businesses. They work when there's a clear call to action and a defined area to cover.

They don't work as a substitute for signage, and they don't work as a branding exercise on their own. A flyer without a sign or a website behind it just looks like a flyer. It needs to point somewhere.

If you're choosing between flyers and signage, signage wins. Flyers are temporary. Signs keep working.

The Practical Order for Most New Businesses

For a shopfront business: signage first, then business cards, then flyers or menus as needed. Your space does the heavy lifting.

For a mobile or trade business: vehicle branding first, then business cards, then site signage like corflute boards or trailer graphics.

For an online or market-based business: business cards first, then stickers or branded packaging, then signage if and when you get a physical space.

For a cafe or hospitality venue: signage and menus together, then business cards, then seasonal print as you go.

The One Rule That Applies to Everything

Spend on the thing that reaches the most people, most often, with the least ongoing effort. That's usually signage. Sometimes it's vehicle graphics. Occasionally it's a business card. It's almost never a flyer on its own.

Whatever you start with, make sure it's designed properly and printed on the right material. One well-made sign does more than a box of rushed cards and a stack of generic flyers. Start with one thing, do it well, and build from there.
